Pixels reveals open-source plan
Plus MapleStory Universe's Action Modules
It’s high summer, so this week’s focus is more trends than news, starting with Pixels’ long-term commitment to open source.
The process begins with its frontend, allowing users to modify the UI and add features such as resource-farming timers or improved accessibility options. Pixels eventually plans to open-source its server, enabling more ambitious experimentation. An asset-weighted governance system will allow the community to vote on changes, with the most popular potentially incorporated into the game’s official codebase.
AI will be a key enabler of this creativity. The Sandbox is already employing it in its new Studio tool, which has attracted more than 12,000 sign-ups despite remaining in alpha. Wider access should follow, alongside larger game jams than the one currently underway.
AI and lower barriers to creation also underpin Nexpace’s vision for MapleStory Universe. This week, it provided more detail on Action Modules: composable smart-contract blocks that give builders access to common onchain actions. Builders will not be able to deploy arbitrary smart contracts, limiting their freedom but also reducing the risks posed to the wider community—an issue of particular concern to Nexpace.
Taken together, these developments point toward a more pragmatic form of user-driven development. AI is making it easier for communities to build, while open-source code, voting systems and pre-approved smart contract modules allow platforms to synergize that activity without surrendering overall control.
