MapleStory's AI hackathon success
Over 430 games submitted to Vibe Camp
This week’s roundup highlights how blockchain games are moving beyond simple speculative actions, such as NFT drops and token sales, toward more structural and sophisticated forms of interaction.
That means greater focus on creator tools, asset systems, infrastructure, and long-term IP strategy.
The clearest example is MapleStory Universe’s VibeCamp, its first AI game jam using the Verse8 creation platform. With more than 430 projects submitted, the event shows how AI tools can dramatically lower the barrier to making user-generated games.
The quality of submissions also appears to be high, although we won’t know which games win a share of the $60,000-worth of NXPC tokens until its 22nd July announcement.
Sky Mavis hasn’t launched a hackathon yet. Instead, it is focused on the two key games that will shape Axie’s future as an IP.
Its new combat-centric game Atia’s Legacy ran its third playtest this week, with players entering eight-way battles. There was also a 1 AXS entry tournament, offering a share of a 2,500 bAXS prize pool. Meanwhile, land NFT-based game Terrariums received an update that lets players boost yield using Axie parts, land items, and fortune slips.
It also generated $95,753 of spending in first week as players bought its offchain currency to ensure they could earn the points required to maximize their yield.
The corporate picture is less certain at Wemade, where founder Park Kwan-ho has sold his major stake to a Chinese-linked investment group for around $600 million. The deal appears to be driven by the opportunity to optimize revenue and profits from Wemade’s key Mir franchise in China.
Blockchain was not mentioned, however, and it is difficult to imagine the company’s new owners will be as committed to the technology as Park has been over the past six years.
By contrast, Avalon’s latest update confirms blockchain remains firmly part of the plan for its AI-heavy UGC ecosystem, which consists of two first-party games and a comprehensive set of tools for users to make their own assets and experiences.
Avalon will use Sony’s Ethereum L2 Soneium for ownership and monetization, although the technology will be integrated without wallets or gas fees being consumer-facing features.
Hopefully, we’ll learn more about Avalon’s plans in the coming months as it prepares for its end-of-year Early Access launch.
